ONR 1517
David Higgot photo. Walker Coe collection. Kapuskasing, Ontario. Leading the "Northland" in Kapuskasing, Ontario. The three car consist will soon be departing for points further south, and connections with the Northland from Cochrane, Timmins, and Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec; the latter at Englehart, Ontario.
This unit was retired after being destroyed in a wreck in North Bay in 1991; leading TEE-Train 1987 and Train #122. They had just departed the North Bay station enroute for Toronto via Orillia and Barrie. The North Bay CN work assignement was sitting in a siding waiting for the Northlander to clear. Train 212, a northbound doublestack was sitting in the siding blocking 122's view of the yard assignment. As 122 rounded the curve they seen the red target and placed the brakes in emergency. Surprisingly, no one was killed on the trains. The head end brakeman was off work for over 6 months with his injuries, while the cook in the dining car never went back to work. The engineer of the switcher was off work for over a year. There were only minor injuries to passengers. Go figure, the crew of the Northlander wasn't held responsible for the accident. Read the hogger's story here.
