Servers

There are 20 known servers so far, each of them named after a Final Fantasy summon. When you first log onto Final Fantasy XI, you will not be given the option to choose which server you will belong to. This will be very frustrating for those of you who have created clans already, 9 months before the game is even scheduled to come out. Don't get angry to quick now, there is a solution to this problem. Once you are in the game, you complete a certain quest, then you will have the option to buy a World Pass. The price of the pass will go higher depending on how many people are buying the pass. With this World Pass, you are giving a ten digit code to use. It lasts for 1 week and can be used for a total of 5 people. You can only choose your new server during the character creation process. Either you "buy" an additional character for an extra 75 cents per month, or you delete the one you currently have. Having the same nickname on two different servers is possible as long as someone else hasn't already chosen it first. I recommend talking with your friends or clan members and agreeing to which server to belong to, then have one or two people go for the World Pass. Then you and your friends or clan members can all use it together.

Here are the names of all the known servers along with their world number.

There is an average of over 1000 people per server simultaneously. In the beta version there was only an average of less then 500 people per server with only 2 servers running at that time.

The following info was given to us by a visitor to this site. We cannot confirm or deny weather or not it is true, we just thought we should add it because it sounds interesting:
"Apparently all Internet connections whether they be broadband or otherwise will all be converted down to that of a 56K connection, which will mean that loading time before starting the game is about 2/3 times longer then what it normally would be, but once it is completed the game runs LAG FREE as no player communicates with any server faster then another player... This is because on each Server they plan to run FFXI on, they have placed a network filter on the connection to even it all out."
