FAQ
Q: What is a MMORPG? A: MMORPG stands for Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. This means that you play alongside other "real" people in order to accomplish goals and gain levels. The vast majority of people in the game will be people just like you, however there are many Non Player Characters (NPCs) that are controlled by the system.
Q: What do I need in order to play FFXI? A: Once it arrives in the US/Canada, you will need a PS2, the Network Adapter, the Hard Drive for the PS2, a USB compatable Keyboard, and optionally a USB compatable Mouse. There will also be a PC version released, the specs you need for the computer are as follows: Processor: Intel Pentium III, Pentium 4 recommended. Memory: 128MB RAM, 256MB recommended. Graphics: DirectX8.1 AGP compatible, Nvidia GeForce 3 recommended. Sound: DirectX8.1 compatible. CD-ROM: 4X or higher, 32X recommended. Modem: 56K. Operating System: Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, XP compatible.
Q: What is a server, and what does it mean to "be on one"? A: A server is like your computer, but much much larger and more powerful (well at least for most of us), it is where all the game information is stored. Your character will be put on a server with many other characters, and you can only interact with characters that reside on the same server as yours.
Q: What is this game going to cost me? A: It really depends. As of August 9, 2002, the day this was posted, the hard drive and game have yet to be released. However, most sources seem to think that the Hard Drive will cost around $100 US, the Network adapter is abuot $40 US, and the game probably around $60 US. The monthly cost to play will most likely be around $10, plus an additional $1 for every other character you create. We will know more closer to the release date.
Q: When is FFXI going to be released? A: It has already been released in Japan, and many Americans have imported all the components needed to play on the Japanese servers. However, it is most likely to be released for the PS2 in the US/Canada sometime before Christmas. Tentative release dates have been anywhere from Nov.2/02 - Feb 22/03. Expect a release date to be revealed when Sony unveils the Hard Drive to the US.
