The EPA estimates:
  • 70% of all air pollution comes from automobiles
  • one diesel truck emits as much air pollution as 150 cars!
  • a 10% market penetration of battery or fuel cell ZEV's would avoid 1 million tons of SOx, NOx, and CO per year and 10 million tons of CO2 per year!
  • a 20% market penetration would cut oil imports by 1.5 million barrels per day!!
It's truly a sad testimony of our culture that we are still using 19th century technology in our 21st century automobiles! Average fuel economy of new retail cars is at an all time low! Many major cities around the world are telling residents to not go outside because auto pollution has reached dangerous levels!
Summing up the situation, retired Air Force General G. Lee Butler, Chief Air Planner for Operation Desert Storm, stated in the Wall Street Journal.

"When externalities such as environmental and health costs, the loss of domestic jobs and basic industries, the trade deficit, commitments of military resources to ensure the free flow of oil from the Middle East, and threats to our energy and national security are included, the true cost of imports exceeds $100 a barrel, according to the General Accounting Office."
What can be done?
What you can do...
  1. Let the american automakers know that you want "green" car alternatives! Go to http://GreenCar.org and email a pre-done postcard to them expressing your concern.
  2. Buy and use electric vehicles!!
  3. Or, convert your existing car to run on clean hydrogen! (go to http://www.clean-air.org to learn more)
  4. Educate yourself on available alternatives by going to the sites listed below or by reading books on electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cells.
  5. Walk more; ride a bicycle to work instead of driving; carpool; use non-diesel powered public transportation
  6. Rent an eco-friendly vehicle on your next business trip or vacation (go to http://www.evrental.com/
  7. GO AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE! :)
Did you know that...
  • Any ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicle can be easily converted to run on hydrogen gas and have NO EMISSIONS!
  • Hydrogen releases 3 times more energy per pound than gasoline or natural gas and 6 times more energy than coal!
  • An average electric car travels 60 miles on a charge, yet the average american travels less than 41 miles per day!
  • Even if an electric vehicle (zero tailpipe emissions) is charged using electricity from a coal-burning power plant, it still only produces less than half of the pollution given off by a gasoline powered car!
  • The technology exists that can power the average car for 600 miles on nothing but water, with the only emissions being water vapor!
  • Due to the high efficiency of electric motors as compared to ICE's, an electric car costs about $.01 - $.02 per mile to operate, whereas a gas auto costs between $.08 - $.10 per mile to operate!

DISCLAIMER!!!

Although the technologies on the following pages are incredibly wonderful and are the perfect answer to the world's energy/oil crisis, the first and best defense we have as the human race against the energy and pollution woes that face us is nothing more complex than CONSERVATION! The first obstacle that we as a people, and especially those who live in the consumption hungry United States of America, have to overcome is our own propensity to consume much more than is necessary. A companion to this is EFFICIENCY. We're not advocating walking to work when it's 30 miles away, or riding a bicycle on a busy interstate. We ARE advocating modesty, creativity, and the use of energy efficient transportation. The American fascination with wealth and larger and larger more gas hungry vehicles is a spiral in the downward direction. Driving a 2 ton truck to the mall a mile away by yourself is not efficient! Driving instead an electric motorcycle or Twike that gets the equivalent efficiency of 80 mpg is! This may take a habit change. It may even require we break out of our comfort zones and do something just because it is right. From our experience, you can create good habits just as easily as bad ones. Once you've gotten used to a clean, quiet, and efficient mode of transport, you'll find it's as natural as breathing (clean air) and you'll never want to go back! We have the perfect opportunity now to unite the awesome environmentally clean technologies shown above with the equally powerful and spiritually cleansing principles of humility, frugality and restraint. We need to change the way we think about energy and about conservation. The more we humble ourselves and begin to see ourselves as symbiants with our earthly home, rather than parasites, the more enjoyable our journey here will be, for us and those around us.
