The RAV4 EV was my first ever test drive of a fully electric, freeway capable vehicle. Rented from EVRental.com while on a business trip, the fun little RAV4 was a definite winner in my book. Praises include: 120 mile range with the NiMH batteries, nice top speed of about 80mph, styling definitely turned some heads, complete with air conditioning and a nice stereo. Complaints: sluggish acceleration, heavy curb weight made handling different than a gas car, A/C reduced range by about 25%. After the experience I became keenly aware of the need for a more widespread public charging infrastructure as well as a 115V AC outlet charging option on all electric cars. Also, I found getting lost to be much more stressful than in a gas car -- a GPS streetfinder unit would be useful to avoid needless backtracking and subsequent loss of range. Overall a wonderful vehicle for local commuting. Too bad it's only available to fleet buyers and short term renters! (Copyright 2001 by JClaw Enterprises) |
