Politically Counterliberal

The underreported views of America's conservative students.

Garrett O'Hara
Rep. Grijalva a little more than a Democrat
03/09/2002

"General membership shall consist of any student who accepts, believes and works for the goals and objectives of MEChA, including the liberation of AZTLAN, meaning self-determination of our people in this occupied state and the physical liberation of our land."

Obviously, if this very quote came from the constitution of Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan, one could easily say that this group is largely anti-American. Herein lies a problem. My congressman is a former member and a supporter of this very organization, and as the U.S. Congressman representing the very area known as "Aztlan," largely known as the area seized by the United States through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mr. Grijalva seems bent on representing those on the other side of the border.

As many of you may know, citizen patrols along the Mexican border in Pima County, Arizona are causing controversy. Simply put, citizens are tired of the lack of protection being provided by the U.S. Border Patrol. As a result, they have set up their own patrols in order to prevent further illegal immigration. For protecting their property and their nation as a whole considering the times in which we live, Mr. Grijalva has called them "cockroaches." In full, "If you shine the light on the cockroaches, they don't like it." That's right. They don't like it, but do you really think they're "cockroaches," Mr. Grijalva? What about your comment that is was "an armed racist movement"?

Mr. Grijalva is also a supporter of the Coalicion de Derechos Humanos, a group that openly advocates for illegal immigrants. Given that illegal immigration is, in fact, illegal, Mr. Grijalva supports illegal activity. He's calling for an FBI probe on U.S. citizens protecting our border, yet he supports illegal activity.

Mr. Grijalva also believes that the tax dollars of American citizens should be spent on the emergency medical care of illegal immigrants. Of course, this would only increase the amount of illegal immigrants who will make the trek to enter this country, knowing that free medical care is just a crossing away. Why aren't Americans taking care of fellow Americans first? If that kind of money is to be spent, shouldn't we be spending it on our own people?

As a constituent, I will certainly be keeping an eye on Mr. Grijalva. He's bad news for our country.
