Minutes April 6, 2003 Palouse Peace Coalition meeting
Kenton Bird, facilitator.
Next meeting, Sunday April 13 at 5:30 at the SUB. This will be a short meeting
to firm up the plans for the next week's actions. It should be over by 6:00
to allow people to attend the Indigo Girls/Winona LaDuke Concert. Miriam Kent
will facilitate. We will have no meeting the following week - Easter Sunday; will
meet next on Sunday April 27, probably at the Campus Christian Center.
Recap of Anna Bachmann presentation:
Approximately 50 people were in attendance at her multi-media presentation at
the CUE on the WSU Campus. It was excellent, and those of us who were able
to hear her speak learned a lot about conditions in Iraq. Many thanks to Dena
Marchant for organizing this event!
Saturday's rally at Friendship Square:
Approximately 60 - 70 people attended the rally at which Anna again spoke, in
addition to many of our local activists. The band, The Transcients, played; the
Coalition voted to give them a token payment of $40.00.
Joy Gordon's visit and presentation:
Joy will be in Moscow from April 16 - 20, rather than the following week. We have had to
reschedule the panel discussion for that week. It was decided that a noon - 1:00 time slot
on Thursday the 17th would be the most likely to attract a wide audience, as there are other
programs on the evenings of the 17th and the 18th that would attract the same audiences.
The probable topic will be the Humanitarian Crisis in Iraq. Ron will firm up plans for the
other panel members by Tuesday the 8th, so we can get publicity out.
Palouse Mall rally Saturday, April 12:
We plan to repeat our anti-war rally next Saturday at 1:00. John Morse has made
fliers, and we had a few copies made at the meeting; I will send an attachment via
e-mail to the list members. We will have some legal observers present, as we did
at the previous rally.
Patriot Act Teach-In:
Tentative dates are April 29, 30, or May 1. Tentative title, is "A Citizen's Guide
to the Patriot Act: Security vs. Liberty". Renae will be the point person for this event.
Carmen offered to help with publicity.
Renaissance Fair:
Miriam reported on the plans for the fair. The peace group will have a table next to
Dave Peckham's bicycle project. Miriam and Carmen will work on organizing the literature
prior to this.
Farmer's Market:
We will again be a presence at the Market on Saturday mornings starting May 5. Chris volunteered to be point person for the first 2 Saturdays. Anyone wishing to help, please contact him at Chris L..
Fundraisers:
We discussed the possibility of a movie night at the Kenworthy. There are some mid-week
times starting May 27, and the cost is $200 for an evening event. Bob will ask about the first
available Friday, or check to see if we could have a benefit night for one of the showings of The
Quiet American. Another possibility is to show the '60s movie, King of Hearts as a benefit
fundraiser.
Our meeting after Easter, April 27, will be a time to focus on our vision as a peace and justice
organization. The bulk of the time that evening will be used in a discussion of who we are as a group. We may bring in an outside facilitator to assist us in this work. So be thinking of what you want to be, to accomplish, to say to the community as the Palouse Peace Coalition. We welcome everyone's ideas.
