This book introduces a unique methodology for solving the nonlinear primitive equations of the atmosphere analytically. The results may answer most major questions on the large-scale extratropical circulations, such as the geographic distributions of the planetary stationary waves at different latitudes and their variabilities; the mechanism and major features of blocking development and synoptic perturbation instability, and the occurrences of stratospheric sudden warmings and warm pools. This new approach reveals that the large-scale perturbations in the time-averaged circulations depend nevertheless on the nonlinear processes of eddy momentum and heat transport, so that the use of linear theory for the study of climatology may only have a limited achievement and significance. This new algorithm can also draw the realistic pictures of the zonal mean circulation fields when the nonlinear processes of wave interactions are considered.
