Tie history

A tie is firstly an accessory to men's clothing, consisting in a strip of fabric that is knotted around the neck, enclosing it but visible at the front only.

The tie originates from the ancient Roman "focale", a type of thin but resistantscarf, worn by soldiers during the winter campaigns or in the Nordic countries, held in place by loops. The same type of clothing was in use in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance period. Steenkerke though, a Belgian town, claims the honour of having "invented" the tie. In 1692 the English made a surprise attack on the French troops who were camped there. According to the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, "the officers (French) did not have enough time to dress properly so, being in such a hurry, they tied the scarf of their uniform into a loose knot and the other end was tucked into the buttonholes of the jacket. And this was how the original tie was born".

It seems that the present name of the tie comes from the Croatian language and was used more as a protection than an ornament or a piece of clothing. During a parade in Paris on the occasion of a victory, the French were bowled over and fascinated by the scarves of the Croatian mercenaries, who called them cravates, deriving from the Croatian word hrvat, "Croatian" and so they also started to wear them themselves."Since then", the above mentioned newspaper states, "the fashion of wearing a tie continues to spread, even though the soldiers at Steenkerke were the first to transform the scarf into a knotted tie".

In the 1700's the tie usually consisted of a long strip of muslim, lace, silk, knotted around the neck with the help of a coloured ribbon and left to hang down over the chest. From this more complex forms derived and even some female ones too with frills.

Between the XVIII and the beginning of the XIX century the tie took on the aspect that it still conserves today, with variants and bow-ties, often fixed in place with pins or decorated with tie-pins. In the present century it is still widely used especially with evening wear or with certain casualclothing a bow-tie, but the most common type is a long strip of fabric (silk, rayon, flannel, wool, leather etc.) that terminates in a point, knotted or putaroundtheneck using a knot, almost a triangleinshape, hanging down the front with the ends usually having two different sizes.

Sevenfold Jacquard ties

"Ties made of printed fabric are contagious in such that they spread their triviality to the men that wear them"
On the contrary, the jacquard fabric can be described as the utmost in elegance.
The most supreme form of workmanship uses today, as in the past, a square, or carré, carre' of fabric (60 x 70 cm - in this case the measurements do not really represent a square ),which is then folded diagonally seven times, giving origin to the tie called sette pieghe - sevenfold tie

Using this procedure in the production makes the fabric so rich that it becomes, at the same time, both the body and soul of the tie.".

(from "Week-end in conversation on male elegance" by Ivano Comi, Stefanoni Publishers, Lecco).
