Tips
The Safe in Shinra Mansion (Nibelheim)
The safe inside the Shinra Mansion in Nibelheim has 3 important things inside,
Summon materia "Odin", RedXIII's Level 4 Limit Break Manual, and the "Key to the
Basement", before attempting to open the safe, remember to heal your characters, you'll
fight a boss (Lost Number) as soon as the safe is opened. The combination is RIGHT
36, LEFT 10, RIGHT 59, RIGHT 97, you have a limited amount of time to open the
safe, if you overshoot, you'll have to do the combination all over again. Remember to
press [OK] or O to confirm the number.
The Guidebook, Earth Harp, & Desert Rose
First off, there's a person in Kalm known as the Kalm Traveller, after Meteor is
summoned by Sephiroth, he'll want to take a journey. He'll need the Guidebook, Earth
Harp, & Desert Rose. The Kalm Traveller is inside the house all the way on the right
side of Kalm. Find him on the second floor.
The Guidebook and how to get it
You can obtain the Guidebook by Morphing the Ghost Ship in the tunnel to the Junon
Underwater Reactor. It'll be on the second screen of the tunnel. The Ghost Ship is
weak against Holy, so equip the person you plan to Morph the Ghost Ship with
Alexander and Elemental materia on their weapon. When you trade the Guidebook in,
you'll recieve a Underwater materia. The Underwater materia eliminates the 20 minute
time limit you have against Emerald Weapon.
Earth Harp & Desert Rose
You can obtain the Earth Harp by beating the Emerald Weapon. Trade in the Earth
Harp to the Kalm Traveller for 3 Master Materias. (Master Magic, Master Summon,
Master Command) And to obtain the Desert Rose, you have to beat Ruby Weapon for
it. Trade in the Desert Rose for a Gold Chocobo with bad stats. Check the Weapons
section on how to beat Emerald and Ruby Weapon.
Turtle's Paradise Flyers
If you read all 6 flyers you can get 6 sources and a Megalixir from the Turtle's Paradise
in Wutai. A source will raise your character's ability by one point permanently! Do not
underestimate the sources, do not sell the sources! It may be only a point, but, when you
get all of them, they add up!
Flyer #1 - In the area before entering Aeris' house, go to the house all the way on the
right, when you go upstairs you'll see a kid on the bed, he'll be muttering something
about no one being able to find it, look at the papers on his wall, read it by pressing
[OK], that's flyer #1.
Flyer #2 - Inside the 1st Floor of the Shinra Building in Midgar, go past the 2 large
staircases and stay on the first floor, read a bunch of papers on a bulletin board near the
elevators.
Flyer #3 - Inside the Gold Saucer Ghost Hotel, read the sign next that's next to a clock,
look on the floor for the "SHOP" sign, it's the only white piece of paper there.
Flyer #4 - At Cosmo Canyon, check the sign next to the TigerLily's Weapons Shop, it's
on the left side of the shop.
Flyer #5 - Also at Cosmo Canyon, check inside the Inn, on the second floor of the Inn,
look to the left of the counter, there's a gold piece of paper, that's the fifth one!
Flyer #6 - During Yuffie's subquest, when you're inside her house, check to the right of
the doorway, there's a scroll there, that's the sixth one! So go to Turtle's Paradise and
get your loot!
Sources and where to get them and what they do*
Later on in the game, you may feel your characters are too weak, or not at where you
want them to be. The solution - get some of them kick ass sources! In the Gelinka,
everyone can be morphed into a source! What I do is I use Demi 3 with All materia
(Gravity) to lower their HP, then I Mime that, and cast it again and if necessary, Mime
again, then it's a Morph fest! Remember, Demi 3 drains the 75% of the enemy's HP, so
it won't kill them, Morph has to kill in order to Morph someone, and a Morph hit is 1/8 of
what your regular physical attack would be.

How to raise limit breaks quickly*
This method is kinda risky....but it's worth it if you're in a hurry to raise your break limits
from the first limit for the level to the second one. (Example - Going from Braver to Cross
Slash requires using your break limit X amount of times. Going from Cross Slash to
Blade Beam will require you to kill X amount of enemies.)Put Fury on your character
using "Hyper" what the status Fury does is decrease your hit percentage but everytime
you get hit your limit bar will get filled up faster, but you'll also be taking more damage!
One place where you don't have to use Hyper to get into Fury mode is Cosmo Canyon,
there, the Penguin like enemies will use "Rage Bomber" on you. It causes Fury on you,
everytime I got hit, my limit bar was filling up fast! Use this technique only in places that
you know well! The last place this should be used is the Northern Crater!
To reach the next Level (Example - Level 2 Climhazzard to Level 3 Meteorain) go to
areas where they're in bunches of 3, 4 or 5, then just keep the other characters in the
back row, if you have 2x/4x-Slash, Counter Attack equip it on the character that's having
their limit level increased. Now just make sure you don't have that character heal, have
the others do it, have that character attack constantly. Or for more fun, cast Beserk on
that character while the rest of your characters sit back and relax or heal. Remember,
don't go to areas that you're not used to being in. The best places to go is the Temple of
the Ancients area, Mideel area, Midgar area, Wutai area. Just remember to equip
yourself properly!
W-Item Materia location & trick
Location of the W-Item materia in Midgar (Disc 2)
During the raid of Midgar in Disc 2, you'll enter the train tunnels after going through a
little "maze", now when you reach the train tunnel, go down (south) the screen, not up! If
you see any of your characters and talk to them, don't listen to them if they say you're
headed the wrong direction, keep going down the tunnel. Eventually you'll hit a dead end
with a save point, but, look on the right side, there's your W-Item materia! Take it, then
save your game!
Location of the W-Item materia if you missed it in Midgar (Disc 3)
If you look on the lower level of Bone Village, you see the staircase? Now look on the
ground close to that staircase, there will be a X on the ground that's a different color than
the ground. Now have em dig on the center of that X you may get Cid's Mop the first
time, the second, maybe even a third time, you could get nothing, the third or fourth try
will ger you the W-Item! Note: If you already got it in Midgar, you can't get another one
here!
How to work the W-Item Trick
To work the W-Item trick, you have to have W-Item equipped and 2 items of what you
want to duplicate. Okay, now when you get to the character equipped with W-Item, select
the item you want to duplicate (let's say Elixir), now select it (the Elixir) with [OK], then
use it (Elixir) with [OK]. Notice you used it (Elixir) and now you have one less of the item
you want to duplicate (Elixir). Now, go to another item (Potion), select that item (Potion)
with [OK] but don't press [OK] to use it! Instead, press [CANCEL], and now the item
you want to duplicate (Elixir) is back to it's original number. Now repeat with using item
number 2 (Potion) and then canceling until you reach the amount of items (Elixirs)
desired. I HIGHLY recommend you try the W-Item trick only against weak enemies who
do squat for damage. Also, one should W-Item all their Megalixirs, Elixirs, X-Potions,
Turbo Ethers, and Hero Drinks until you have 99! These items are really important to use
when it comes to fighting the Weapons and other bosses! Well, regarding the earlier
part where I said, you need 2 items of what you want to duplicate...I was wrong! You
don't need 2, you only need one! Yup, it shows up as a blank, but it reappears in your
item menu screen! So, you can duplicate ALL battle useable items!
How to win the "Special" Battle Square*
One should have done the following before entering Special Battle...
1. Beaten Proud Clod to know how to beat him again with one person only and
handicaps.
2. Gotten Ultima Weapon, actually, you can't get into Special Battle without the Ultima
Weapon.
3. Mastered some HP Plus, MP Plus, Magic Plus, Counter Attack, 2x/4x-Slash, and
some Speed Plus and Luck Plus materias.
4. Be at Level 65 and up, no way anyone can win at Level 50 unless they're really lucky,
or they loaded up on Sources.
5. W-Item'ed Megalixirs, Elixirs, Turbo Ethers, X-Potions, Hero Drinks, Remedies, and
Vaccine. Make sure you have 99 of all.
6. Have Escort Guard armor, Mystile isn't the best for Battle Square.
7. Have the Mime materia. And if you got far enough in the game, equip Master
Command instead of Mime!
8. Equip the Ribbon, it's VERY IMPORTANT!
9. Also important is the Long Range materia for keeping Cloud alive! Remember to
stick Cloud with Long Rane materia amd put him in the back row before you enter Battle
Square!
Now, to win it......
1. Load up all your Counter Attacks, if any.
2. If you have 2x-Slash, use it, if it's not mastered or at 4x-Slash, use it anyway.
3. HP Plus and Mp Plus til you have 9999/999, it's VERY IMPORTANT to have maxed
out HP and MP.
4. Don't bother with Summon spells, you don't have much MP to go around.
5. Equip Mime and Ribbon, it's very important!
6. If you have Enemy Skill with Big Guard, White Wind, and Death Force, equip it, if
you're missing any, you could get in trouble, possibly...
7. If you don't have more than one Counter Attack materia, make sure to have Quadra
Magic and Ultima, Quadra Magic is at Level 2 or 3 and Ultima is almost mastered. If you
do use Quadra Magic with Ultima, don't use any Counter Attacks. What you'll be doing is
relying on your Mimes, Quad Magic with Ultima kills almost everyone.
You're going to have one (or two) of three strategies....
1. Quad Magic with Ultima, then keep on Miming it so you don't waste MP, be sure to
have Magic Plus equipped if ou use this strategy. Also, do not equip Counter Attack!
But do have 2x/4x-Slash ready in case you run out on Magic or can't resort to it
anymore!
2. Physical attacks only, no Magic other than Enemy Skill and Cure mastered, this is for
people around Level 70 and with all Status above 100 before putting any "plus"
materias (Strength, Dexterity, Magic, Vitality, Spirit, Luck) put on all Counter Attacks,
2x/4x-Slash, Speed Plus, and Luck Plus. Magic Plus is not neccessary. You will have to
use Big Guard and a Hero Drink on yourself right away before doing anything.
3. This is the craziest, stupidest, and cheapest way! Now, make sure you're break limit
is full....Omnislash of course....now you'll also need a Mime for this, follow everything for
strategy number 2 EXCEPT Counter Attacks! If you're lucky, you won't even have to heal
yourself or use magic! What you'll do is, use a Hero Drink (or 2, or 3) on yourself, then
you'll use Big Guard, then you'll use Vaccine if you don't have any status other than
Haste on yourself. Now, if you had more than 1000 HP knocked off while you did all that,
use a X-Potion on yourself, then use Omnislash! Now, unless you get your Command
Materia disabled, you can keep on Miming Omnislash! If your HP falls low though, stop
and heal! Go to strategy number 2! Also, you may not want to use Cure magic or Big
Guard when you face Proud Clod, if you're experienced against him, you'll know why.
The reason why you use Vaccine is in case your accessory is broken when the slots
come up to determine your handicap.
You should be facing all "boss-type enemies", you may face a Tonberry, so if you see
him right away, cast "Death Force" on yourself. Other than that, Ribbon and Escort
Guard along with being in the back row should protect you from most attacks. Also, you
get the "harsher" handicaps in "Special" Battle Square, such as "No MP left" or "HP and
MP halved", "Weapon broken", or the worse one if you took too long to kill the monster
for that round, "Time x 30 damage", that one will hurt if you don't rush! Good luck and
print this guide up if necessary, if it's too long I'm sorry, but this a sure-fire way to win!
The easiest way to get multiple Ribbons in the game*
You may know that Morphing Master Tonberry gets you a Ribbon, but there's someone
easier to Morph that gets you a Ribbon! There's a plant-like creature called "Ho-chu"
you'll run into every now and then in the Battle Square. (You face the "Ho-chu" only in
Battle Square) It's HP isn't as high as Master Tonberry, and it doesn't have killer attacks
like "Everybody's Grudge" or "Knife". It uses Whip Sting and Big Pollen on you, and if
you already have a Ribbon equipped, he's easy! It has under 9999 HP, so if you used 3
(you may need to use as many as 5 Hero Drinks and were using Method 2 or 3 for
Battle Square, just Morph him!
Diamond Weapon
The easiest chump/Weapon in the game, you'll fight this "big badass" after going to the
Forgotten Capitial with Bugenhagen. So you'll have to go to the Midgar area and defend
Midgar by getting in this thing's way. Once it gets on land, it can be fought. So, go fight
it! It's not that hard, 100,000 HP, anyone around Level 50 or 60+ can beat it without a
problem, use your better magic (Ultima, Comet, Contain) to attack him, summons will
work pretty well also, just remeber to keep your HP up and attack with a quickness, it
could be dangerous to fight this guy if unprepared. But, as I said, 100,000 HP, not much
to worry about. The bigger they are, the harder they fall. Also, you can steal Yuffie's
Rising Sun from it! Rising Sun has 4 linked slots and doubles materia growth.
Ultimate Weapon
This so called "Ultimate Weapon" is the ultimate wuss! When fighting him in Mideel, he
could be trouble for your team because you're using you're weaker squad because
you're without Cloud, so they could be quite weak, and in for the fight of their lives! He'll
have 100,000 HP in Mideel and it's pretty hard to hit this sucker, so magic is the key,
hopefully you took the time to make Ultima useable after saving Corel from the train. So,
same as Diamond pretty much, but make sure you cast the defensive spells or what I
call, the defensive set which is Regen with Wall, Haste, or Big Guard (Big GUard is the
better choice because it's Wall WITH Haste, so it'll save some MP and save a turn also!)
So cast that if you have it. After you beat Ultimate Weapon in Mideel, it flies off like the
chicken it is. Don't worry about it now, go after it later. Eventually when you past by this
giant lake close to Junon that was never there, you'll notice a flying chicken (Ultimate
Weapon) make sure your HP and MP is up, then crash into it with the Highwind to
initiate the fight. You can use only magic because you're fighting aboard the Highwind,
so, pretty much, just cast the defensive set, and attack with magic like crazy! After a
certain amount of damage, it'll fly off being the chicken it is, so go after it! By the way, if
you get the chance to fight it at Gongaga, remember to steal from him! I won't tell you
what you get, but it might be good, it might be worthless, you don't know till you get
it....Anyway, if you knocked out enough of it's HP, it'll fly off to the Cosmo Canyon area. If
you didn't oh boy..it'll fly around for awhile, go find it and keep on crashing into it, if it
stops at a city, crash into it and you'll fight it. It's favorite destinations are, Mideel,
Gongaga, Nibelheim, and Midgar. It can be found flying aimlessly around the Wutai
continent until you crash into it. At the final fight at Cosmo Canyon, he won't have that
much HP left, so finish him off for good! Use the same strategy as you used to beat
Diamond, and that should be it, you'll get Cloud's Ultima Sword for all your troubles. And,
if you haven't done so yet, you'll be able to go into the Ancient Forest without a Mountain
Chocobo now.
Emerald Weapon
Well, it's time to face that bad ass Emerald Weapon...first, before reading anything,
here's what I had equipped playing against Emerald the first time, and what you should
at least have...

A LOT of HP Plus and MP Plus materia mastered!
No Tough Rings or Championship Belts
Championship Belts on 2 main attackers, Tough Ring
for Healer
Quite a lot eh? Well to get those extra items, use the W-Item cheat method. You'll also
need to do some heavy duty Morphing in the Gelinka for sources. Cloud is the MAIN
character here. Cloud must have 4 out of 6 status (Strength, Dexterity, Luck, Vitality)
over 100 points. Strength for hitting power, Dexterity for ability to dodge, Luck for Critical
Hits, Vitality for durability. That's before equipping the Status Plus materias. (Speed
Plus, Luck Plus) Magic Plus is unecessary for Emerald. So, got all your stuff yet? Oh,
also, when I said anyone on Line 7 of stuff to have, ANYONE BUT VINCENT! His Limit
breaks will screw the flow of the attack up!
Make sure ALL your guys are in the back row. Equip Cloud with a mastered Final Attack
w/ a mastered Revive, if you don't have Final Attack mastered, use Revive master, if
Revive is not mastered, use Phoenix. Now, put all the Counter Attacks on him, along
with 4x-Slash, and the as many Speed Plus and Luck Plus materias. Also, put a Enemy
Skill materia and Long Range materia on him. Now, Barret needs to have Mime on his
armor, put about 6 "All" materias on the Missing Score, and if you got any more "Status
Plus" materias, put it on him. The third character needs to have the Underwater materia
along with Mastered Cure and Mastered "All" and Enemy Skill with Big Guard, if you
have a extra Final Attack materia, put the lower level one on this person. She/he will be
the healer/Limit Break add-on, also, if you have another Mime, put it on this person.
Now, notice I didn't say a word about W-Summon, Quadra Magic, Knights of the
Round....physical attacks is the idea here, which is why you need the Hero Drinks!
Everyone has to have their HP and MP maxed out to the 9999/999 set using the HP and
MP Plus materias. So, everyone set? Back row? Maxed out HP and MP? Proper
equipment, items, and materia? Yes? If no, go to the Gelinka till your fighting 3 hits Level
80 and be sure to make sure to have what I had! Now if you're ready, go to battle! First
thing to do is...heal! Emerald has the first attack everytime, so heal! Then, use the
defensive set and use the Megalixirs if you got hit. Now, break out the Hero Drinks, one
for everyone! And be sure to keep using the Elixirs/Megalixirs! Don't use Cure to heal,
use the items! That's why you have to have so many! Now, since you're on Level 80+,
with the Hero Drinks, Cloud should be hitting for 9999 per 4x-Slash! Now, use Barret to
Mime the action, and have member #3 heal! The reason why I say, bring Megalixirs
instead of Cure magic is because Emerald Shoot will drain HP and MP! So when you're
low on MP and you're relying on Cure magic, you're fuct! So get busy with Miming the
4x-Slash, and use the Limit Breaks whenever you're on full HP! Cloud hitting 15 times
for 9999 damage per slash does 149985 damage, I used Omnislash 3 times so, that
took out 449955 damage, that's almost half of Emerald's HP! So, just remember to
attack and use the Megalixirs without a second thought! Eventually you'll beat him and
say, wow, he was pretty easy!
That's cause you listened to me! And of course, GeekboyUSA told me, use 4x-Slash, it's
faster than waiting for Bahamut Zero with Quadra Magic or W-Summon KOTR, they take
forever! Also, I noticed with my past encounters with Emerald, he uses Aire Tam Storm
when I used Bahamut Zero with Quadra Magic and W-Summon....I have a theory that
Emerald gets pissed when someone uses magic on him. So that's why I listened to the
Geek and used physical attacks, he didn't tell me about the Hero Drinks, that one I
thought up myself! =) By the way, thanx for helping me GeekboyUSA! Again! Also, for
your "hard" fought battle, you win....3 Master Materias!!!!!! Holy cow Batman! So, use
them wisely against Ruby Weapon. The walkthrough for Big Red is coming soon!
Note: The preferred third character for Emerald is Yuffie because you can keep her in
the back row without putting Long Range materia on her, Conformer is also her best
weapon, so she won't have to be healing all the time. Also, recently mentioned on the
messageboard, Aire Tam Storm is, Materia spelled backwards! Apparently there's a
way to lower the damage from Emerald's Aire Tam Storm. The less materia you have
equipped, the less Aire Tam Storm will hit. It goes by 1111 HP damage for every
materia equipped, so Aire Tam Storm will hurt, but not as much.
Additional Note: The second time I played the game, I went without Cloud's Ultima
Weapon and used Ragnarok, I also went without Barret's Level 4 Limit Break and
Missing Score, and I didn't even get Yuffie past her Level 2 Limit! Cloud was still at level
68, Barret was at Level 65, Yuffie at level 64. And using all the stuff I said you should've
had, I still beat Emerald! So it says a lot about the importance of being properly
equipped!
Ruby Weapon
Before doing anything, kill Emerald Weapon first, then you should read this little
walkthrough thingie. Okay, now for Ruby, the only changes are....W-Summon, Master
Summon, HP and MP Absorb materias, Magic Plus is a must here! Luck Plus isn't
necessary, Speed Plus is a BIG neccessity. You also need to have killed 2 of your other
characters, so do that first, Cloud is the main character here, everyone will either be
useless or will stay dead. Now, if you have Knights of the Round, equip it with HP
Absorb, and equip MP Absorb with Master Summon.
This is what I call, "the super el cheapo method" or, how I always win. So just make sure
your guys stay dead, and KotR away at Ruby, since you have HP and MP Absorb
equipped, everytime you use KotR, you gain back HP and MP! I usually gained back
more MP than what i used to use KotR. Now if you use the both of them, you don't have
to bother healing! Or....if you don't have KotR, put MP Absorb with Master Summon. The
only thing to do here is to first use a Hero Drink, then use a Elixir on yourself, now use
W-Summon with KotR on the tentacles, first one goes for the tentacles, the second
round goes for Ruby itself. Now, hopefully your KotR attacks have been hitting for 9999
damage per hit. It should if your Magic Status is on 255 by itself, if it's around 225 or so,
the Hero Drink should've boosted the magic power rating to 255 for this round. Now, if
you want to bring your guys back, read on, if you just want to kill him for the heck of it, just
keep using W-Summon KotR.
So after using KotR on Ruby and the tentacles for seven rounds, the eigth summon, or
last 4th W-Summon is Hades, that should put Ruby on Stop status, now use Phoenix to
bring back your party members, or you could use Revive-All, but preferably Phoenix
even though the flame will heal Ruby. Phoenix should be the 9th summon, KotR is the
10th summon, that's the one that kills it without having it wipe out your party with the
Whirlsand Attack. So now all your guys get the AP and EXP. One note, the revival
method doesn't work EVERYTIME, so make sure your other guys are equipped to
knock out about 100,000 HP from Ruby if it doesn't work.
his is a process that will take a lot of money, and a lot of time. Expect to spend at least 2-3 hours before
attaining the Golden Chocobo. However, the time is well worth it, because when you receive a Golden
Chocobo, you can attain the most powerful Summon Materia in the game - Knights of the Round. So, if
you've got plenty of Gil and have a few hours to spend, let the breeding begin. I recommend you read this
ENTIRE document before you start, and you should probably print it out as well.
Additionally, you must be quite far in the game (you must have the airship) before you begin. I find that it
helps to wait until much later, because you will have a lot of money. Buying your Stalls The first thing you
need is to purchase stalls (where else are your Chocobos going to stay?). Go to the Chocobo Farm (the
easternmost dot on the eastern continent) and talk to the man inside the main house. When you are
presented with options, the top option will be to purchase a stall for 10,000 Gil. You need to buy six of
them, so keep doing this until you have six.
Capturing Chocobos There are several locations in the world where Chocobos can be found, marked by
Chocobo tracks on the ground. However, each set of tracks has a certain type of Chocobo associated with it,
so only 3 of the locations are of any use. The Chocobo Types will be covered in a moment. At each of these
locations, while you are carrying the Attract Chocobo Purple Materia, you will have a chance of encountering
a Chocobo during a random overworld battle. If you do encounter them, kill all of the enemies (make sure
you don't hit the Chocobo!) and then the battle will end and you will be riding. Press X to dismount, and
then it will ask you what to do with the Chocobo:

Chocobo Types When you are selecting Chocobos back at the farm, the way they look determines how
healthy and active they are. There are several different types, but only three are useful:
Useless: Standing Chocobos (Standing & Swaying), Bad Chocobos (Walking with head down)
Walking: Head up, walking
Running: Head up, running
Dashing: Head down, running extremely fast
If they are standing still or not moving, simply get rid of them (Second choice)
Selecting Chocobos & Gender When you get a Chocobo of the type you are looking for, choose the first
choice to keep him. After you do this, the boy will tell you what gender he is. (We're breeding them, so
gender is *very* important). After you select them, he will tell about the Chocobo - in the second line of
Japanese characters, the first character is how you determine the gender. If the character is curvy and has a
line through it, it is a girl. If the character is all straight lines, it is a boy. After choosing them, you get the
opportunity to name them - I also usually put a number on the end of their name denoting what level of
Chocobo they are, because you will need to know the level during the breeding process - i.e.: "Crow2" =
Running Chocobo, "Sarah3" = Dashing Chocobo
Chocobo Tracks The locations in which to find the good types of Chocobos are:
Southeast of Golden Saucer: Walking Chocobos
Southern Island (Where Cloud was in a coma): Running Chocobos
Northern Continent (Western Side): Dashing Chocobos
Although these places are the only places you can get these types of Chocobos, not every Chocobo
captured there will be the correct type - you will also find some useless ones.
Chocobo Sensei On the northern continent - the one shaped like a Chocobo, oddly enough (: - there is a
man who is the Chocobo Sensei. He can sell you the best feed for your Chocobos (feed is covered below).
If you talk to the Green Chocobo here you will receive an "Enemy Special" Yellow Materia. His house is near
the center of the continent, and you can find it if you fly directly northwest from Bone Village - it is a house
in the snow with a patch of green around it (so you can land).
Riding your Chocobos The second from the last option in the boy's menu (see translation above) is "Ride
Chocobo out of Barn". When you do this, you are free to roam the entire world. You can also board your
airship as you normally would, and the Chocobo will be with you when you disembark. If you dismount from
a Chocobo while you are riding it, it will stay in that place until you go to it again. If you want to return it to
the Farm, simply ride it back into the Farm and it will go back to its stall.
Chocobo Racing If you go back to the Golden Saucer, you may race your Chocobos to improve their class
and to gain items. The way you race is to go up to the girl on the left side of the Chocobo Racing room,
and talk to her. She will ask you three questions:

After this, you will be presented with a screen where you can find out the stats of your Chocobo and the
Chocobos you're racing against. If you have one of the top 2 speeds (or are simply faster than everyone
else), you will have no problem. Occasionally there will be a black racer who is incredibly hard to beat, but
he won't always appear, so if he beats you just try again. During C and B classes, the computer can
probably win for you, but on the A and S classes, it is helpful to race yourself. A handy tip for racing (this
lets you win even if you have lower top speed than the other people) is to switch to manual control and hold
down R1 & R2 & Square. This will make you run faster, and it will keep your dash meter at a constant.
Each Chocobo starts as class "C". To advance your class, you must take 1st place in three races (it does
not matter which course you use). There are four classes - in order, they are: "C" - "B" - "A" - "S". Each
time you advance a class the other racer's abilities increase as well.
To increase their top speed and stamina, you need to feed them. Feed can either be bought from the
Chocobo Sensei, or from the boy in the barn. The Chocobo Sensei's food is much more effective (and
expensive) though. Basically, stuff your Chocobos full of food to increase your stamina and top speed. The
Top Speed has a limit, but you should be able to use a Dashing Chocobo and simply feed him and take
him to the "S" class. Now that I've covered the basics, here is how you breed different kinds of Chocobos.
The first two kinds that you can get are Green & Blue. Green Chocobos can run over any mountain in the
game, and Blue can run over any river - thus making them extremely useful for accessing some items.
To breed them, you need four Chocobos - a male & a female Walking Chocobo, and a male & female
Running Chocobo. Go to each of the locations (Walking is found near Golden Saucer, Running is found on
the island where Cloud was in a coma) and capture Chocobos until you have each gender of each level.
Once you have one of each, you need to find the proper seasoning. Go to the Chocobo Sensei's house,
and land on the patch of grass. Now, equip the Steal Yellow Materia on one of your characters. Run around
on the grass until you encounter a large red dragon (the only other enemy are Squirrels). As soon as you
start fighting him, start stealing from him. Eventually, you will get the item (after stealing, you will receive a
message ending in an exclamation point indicating success). Either kill him or run from him, but you need
to do it three times so you can get three pieces of seasoning.
Once you have the seasoning, go back to the Chocobo farm. Save your game before entering, and then go
up to the boy and select "Breed Chocobos". (See menu translation above). Choose your male Walking
Chocobo and your female Running Chocobo. Next you will be asked what kind of seasoning you're going to
use, and choose the second from the bottom option (it should have a "3" by it, indicating how many you
have). If you succeed, you will receive a Green Chocobo that can cross mountains. If you were not
successful, and you get another Yellow Chocobo, immediately reset your game and reload to the game that
you saved before entering the farm. Once you have the Green Chocobo, go outside and save once again.
Now, go back inside and pick the other two - Female Walking & Male Running, and you should receive a
Blue Chocobo that can cross rivers. If you do not, reset, reload your saved game, and continue this process
until you get the desired color. It took me about 3 resets to get each kind. However, even when you get the
correct color, you need to make sure that your Blue & Green Chocobos are of different genders. If they are
not, keep resetting until you get the correct color and gender.
After breeding the Blue & Green Chocobos, you have to wait a while before you may breed with them. Now is
an excellent time to explore the new places with your Chocobos. There is a cave on Yuffie's Continent that
you can now reach, as well as one on the islands in the lower right corner. There is also a "Frog Forest" near
Red XIII's hometown that you can get to with the Mountain Chocobo. You may also want to stop in at the
Golden Saucer, play a few games, maybe get acquainted with Chocobo racing. After all this, you may want
to go up north to the snowy tracks and capture 4 Chocobos - you're going to need them in a little while.
After a while, go back to the Chocobo farm and you should have one piece of seasoning left. Save your
game, then breed using your Blue & Green Chocobos, with the same seasoning. Keep resetting your game
if it does not work, and eventually you will get a Black Chocobo, who can cross both Mountains & Rivers.
With this Chocobo, there is a cave on the same continent as the Golden Saucer that you can now reach.
The Golden Chocobo requires a bit more work, but once you attain him you can finally get the "Knights of
the Round" Summon Materia. First, you need to go out and capture a Dashing Chocobo (Northern Snow
Continent) and make sure it is the opposite gender of your Black Chocobo. Then, you need to race your
Chocobos until they are at the "S" class (see Chocobo Racing, above). Once both your Black & Dashing
Yellow Chocobos are in the "S" class, then you need to obtain a special seasoning. In the northwest corner
of the map, there is an island (it is ON the map, not the one that does not appear on the map) with some
forests and a place where you can land. Inside this forest are little goblins with boxing gloves - you can
obtain the seasoning you need by stealing it from them. On the seasoning list, it will be the final choice
before "Never Mind". Before attempting to breed, once again, save your game outside and reset if you
don't get the Golden one (although you should get it on the first try). Now that you have your Golden
Chocobo, go to the northeastern corner of the map - there is an island there that is not shown on the map.
It is circular, and has a cave at one end. In this cave is the "Knights of the Round" Summon Materia.
Also, once you have your Golden Chocobo, you may be able to win an "S" Class race. If you do, you will get
a variety of nice items.
